1How the Overall IELTS Band Score Is Calculated
Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — rounded to the nearest whole or half band. All four skills carry equal weight; none counts more than another.
2The IELTS Rounding Rule
Because the average of four scores can fall between two bands, IELTS uses a set rounding rule to reach the nearest half band:
- .25 → up An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band. Example: 6.25 becomes 6.5.
- .75 → up An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Example: 6.75 becomes 7.0.
- otherwise The score rounds to the nearest half or whole band as normal. Example: 5.625 becomes 5.5.
The calculator above applies this exact rule, so your overall band always matches the official IELTS method.
3IELTS Listening Band Score Chart
The IELTS Listening test has 40 questions, each worth one mark, so your raw score is out of 40. The same Listening chart applies to both Academic and General Training. This IELTS listening band score chart is an indicative guide — official boundaries can vary slightly between test versions.
| Raw Score / 40 | Band Score |
|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 |
| 37–38 | 8.5 |
| 35–36 | 8.0 |
| 32–34 | 7.5 |
| 30–31 | 7.0 |
| 26–29 | 6.5 |
| 23–25 | 6.0 |
| 18–22 | 5.5 |
| 16–17 | 5.0 |
| 13–15 | 4.5 |
| 10–12 | 4.0 |
4IELTS Reading Band Score Chart (Academic & General)
The Reading test also has 40 questions. Crucially, General Training Reading needs more correct answers than Academic Reading to reach the same band, because the GT texts are less demanding. This IELTS reading band score chart shows both side by side (indicative):
| Band | Academic / 40 | General / 40 |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 39–40 | 40 |
| 8.5 | 37–38 | 39 |
| 8.0 | 35–36 | 37–38 |
| 7.5 | 33–34 | 36 |
| 7.0 | 30–32 | 34–35 |
| 6.5 | 27–29 | 32–33 |
| 6.0 | 23–26 | 30–31 |
| 5.5 | 19–22 | 27–29 |
| 5.0 | 15–18 | 23–26 |
| 4.5 | 13–14 | 19–22 |
| 4.0 | 10–12 | 15–18 |
Use the “raw scores” mode in the calculator to convert your Listening and Reading marks automatically — just pick Academic or General Training first.
5Writing & Speaking Scores
Writing and Speaking aren’t marked out of 40. They’re scored directly by certified examiners against detailed band descriptors. Writing is judged on task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; Speaking adds fluency and pronunciation. Because these are examiner-assigned bands, you enter them straight into the calculator.
6What Each IELTS Band Means
The IELTS scoring system runs from Band 1 to Band 9, each describing a level of English:
Full operational command — accurate, fluent, complete understanding.
Fully operational with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies.
Operational command with occasional inaccuracies in some situations.
Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies.
Partial command, coping with overall meaning in most situations.
Basic competence limited to familiar situations.
Bands 3 to 1 describe extremely limited, intermittent, and non-users, while Band 0 means the test was not attempted.
7What Band Score Do You Need?
There’s no fixed “pass” mark in IELTS — the band you need depends on your goal. Many universities ask for an overall 6.0 to 7.0, often with a minimum in each section, while immigration and professional bodies set their own thresholds. Always check the exact requirement of the institution or authority you’re applying to. Preparing a study-abroad application usually means submitting your academic record too — our GPA Calculator helps you work out your grade point average alongside your IELTS score.

?Frequently Asked Questions
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Add your four section band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), divide by four, and round to the nearest half band. For example, 7 + 6.5 + 6 + 6.5 = 26 ÷ 4 = 6.5 overall.
How do I convert my raw score to a band score?
For Listening and Reading, match your number of correct answers (out of 40) to the band charts above — remembering that Academic and General Training Reading use different boundaries. These conversions are indicative, as IELTS does not publish an official fixed table.
How does IELTS round the overall band score?
If the average ends in .25 it rounds up to the next half band (6.25 → 6.5), and if it ends in .75 it rounds up to the next whole band (6.75 → 7.0). Other averages round to the nearest half or whole band.
Is Academic Reading scored the same as General Training?
No. General Training Reading needs more correct answers than Academic Reading to reach the same band, so select the correct test type in the calculator before converting your raw score.
What is a good IELTS band score?
It depends on your goal. Many universities require an overall 6.0 to 7.0, often with minimum section scores, while immigration programs set their own targets. A Band 7 (“good user”) is a common benchmark for higher education.
Is this IELTS band score calculator free?
Yes, it’s completely free with no sign-up. You can calculate your overall band and convert raw scores as many times as you like.
